Azores to Southampton - Milebuilder 23rd April - 5 May 2011
Join on Saturday 23rd April in Horta, set sail on the 25th and arrive in Southampton approximately 8 days later before leaving the yacht on the 5th May
Sailing from the famous port of Horta across the Atlantic and up the Western Approaches into the English Channel before passing the Needles lighthouse on the approach to the Solent is one of the great sailing voyages.
Horta on the Island of Faial in the Azores has been a mid Atlantic stopover for centuries with a sea wall covered with paintings from all the visiting yachts (and if you look carefully you’ll find one from our visits on Big Spirit) and the World famous Pete’s Bar, a must visit for any serious sailor.
When you join Big Spirit you’ll have the chance on your arrival day to settle in and explore Horta, the bars and restaurants ready for the following day spent training on the boat at sea, getting your sea legs and practicing safety drills and sail handling.
We’ll then be heading off for the 1500nm sail North East to the England, to arrive approximately 8 days later.
The trip will cover all areas of sailing the yacht from sail handling, trimming, spinnaker work, helming and manning a watch in true off shore conditions aboard a true ocean racer.
